Nineteenth-century rooms beside the Gate of Dawn

The St. Palace occupies a handsome 19th-century building on Aušros Vartų gatvė, so close to the Gate of Dawn that you could hear the chapel bells from bed. Formerly the Europa Royale, it was fully renovated and rebranded, and the result is one of the Old Town's better-value boutique stays: historic bones, individual room layouts and stylish decor rather than corridor after identical corridor.

The details are what guests warm to — heated bathroom floors, comfortable beds, air conditioning and tea and coffee in the room — and the hotel connects directly to the historic Medininkai restaurant. Staff at the front desk get consistent praise for being friendly and accommodating, and for a four-star this central, the rates stay refreshingly reasonable.

Good to know

The location is the headline: the Gate of Dawn and the Basilian Gates are seconds away, and the rest of the Old Town unrolls northwards on foot. Rooms vary in shape and size because of the building's age, which is part of the charm — but worth knowing if you like predictability.

A few honest caveats. Housekeeping only cleans if you hang the sign on your door, which some guests feel is below four-star standard. Breakfast can be uneven, with hot dishes running out before the end of service. Some standard rooms are on the small side, rooms in the annexes involve steep, narrow staircases, and the walls are thin enough that hallway noise carries.
