The short version
  • On a quiet Old Town lane, minutes from the sights but away from the noise.
  • A private courtyard garden with BBQ facilities — rare for a city-centre hostel.
  • Fully equipped shared kitchen with free tea and coffee.
  • Free on-site parking, almost unheard of in the Old Town.

A guesthouse in hostel clothing

Mikalo House feels less like a hostel and more like staying with a well-organised friend. It sits on Šv. Mikalojaus gatvė, a quiet lane in the western Old Town, a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk from the train and bus stations and a short stroll from the main sights, supermarkets and bars. Shoes come off at the door, the rooms are spotless, and the whole place runs at a gentle, unhurried pace.

The facilities punch well above the price. There's a fully equipped kitchen with free tea and coffee, spacious private rooms — some with balconies — and a lovely courtyard garden with a BBQ for warm evenings. The staff are a big part of the charm, endlessly friendly and generous with local recommendations, and the free on-site parking is a genuine rarity this deep in the Old Town.

Good to know

This is a quiet house by design — ideal for couples, families and travellers who want a peaceful night, and deliberately short on party-hostel energy. If you're after organised bar crawls and a buzzing common room, you'll find the vibe subdued; that's rather the point.

The practical caveats are those of a historic building on a budget. There's no lift, so upper-floor rooms mean hauling luggage up the stairs. The shared bathrooms can feel cramped, with the odd temperamental shower and slow drain. Reception closes in the late afternoon, so late arrivals need to arrange a lockbox key in advance, dorm bunks don't have privacy curtains, and shoes are left in an open rack by the entrance.
