The short version
  • A converted 17th-century Discalced Carmelite monastery, right beside the Gate of Dawn and St Teresa's Church.
  • Rooms occupy former monks' cells, many looking onto a tranquil inner courtyard and garden.
  • Remarkably quiet for an address in the very heart of the Old Town.
  • An easy walk from both the train and bus stations — handy for arrival day.

Monastic calm beside the Gate of Dawn

Few hotels anywhere let you sleep in an actual monk's cell. Domus Maria occupies a former 17th-century Discalced Carmelite monastery on Aušros Vartų gatvė, directly beside the Gate of Dawn and St Teresa's Church, and the atmosphere survives the conversion: vaulted hallways, religious art and a sense of hush that most city-centre hotels would kill for.

That tranquillity is the real luxury here. Despite sitting on one of the Old Town's main thoroughfares, the building wraps around a peaceful inner courtyard and garden, and guests consistently describe their stays as calm and restorative. The multilingual reception team are warm and helpful, and the whole place is kept scrupulously clean.

Good to know

The location earns its keep twice over: the Gate of Dawn end of the Old Town is atmospheric and less touristy at night, and the train and bus stations are within easy walking distance, which makes carless arrivals simple. Ask for a courtyard-facing room for the full monastic-calm effect.

Set expectations to 'characterful' rather than 'plush'. There is no air conditioning, so rooms can get uncomfortably warm during summer heatwaves; standard rooms are compact and skip conveniences like a mini-fridge; and some guests find the thick pillows and beds on the hard side. Breakfast is serviceable rather than special, and drivers should reserve the limited paid parking (around €20 a day) well in advance.
