A nostalgic Soviet-era canteen
Valgykla Montuotojas is a classic valgykla — a self-service canteen — on Naugarduko gatvė in the Naujamiestis (New Town) part of central Vilnius, a short walk south-west of the Old Town. It is unapologetically no-frills and proudly dated, a nostalgic trip back to the late-Soviet era that locals remember and curious visitors come to experience. The decor is part of the appeal rather than an oversight.
What keeps people coming back is the food and the value: huge portions of tasty, homemade-style Lithuanian comfort food at prices that are hard to believe, with an excellent price-to-quality ratio. Service is famously fast — point at what you want along the counter and it is on your tray in moments — and take-away is a popular, convenient option.
Good to know
Expect Lithuanian canteen staples: cepelinai (potato-and-meat dumplings, a frequent favourite here), šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup), Kijevo kotletas (chicken Kiev), hearty kharcho soup and varškės apkepas (curd casserole). Portions run very large, so if you want less, ask for a half portion — 'pusė porcijos'. The main hurdle for newcomers is simply finding the door, which is tucked away in an inner courtyard off the main street. It typically runs weekday daytime hours, but times and prices change, so check before a special trip.
