The short version
  • Authentic, homemade Lithuanian cooking described by regulars as "food like at home."
  • Extremely affordable, with generous portions and outstanding value.
  • Warm, friendly service and a genuine, no-frills local atmosphere.
  • A hidden, off-the-tourist-trail spot popular with locals — and sometimes busy at lunch.

The lowdown

Žvejų smuklė ("the fishermen's tavern") is the kind of unglamorous local canteen that travellers treasure once they find it. The interior is simple and the exterior plainer still, but the homemade Lithuanian cooking is the whole point: hearty, traditional and very inexpensive, the food people mean when they say a place tastes "like home."

Expect the comfort-food canon — cepelinai (potato dumplings), potato pancakes, a fish soup and cod among them — in generous helpings at prices that keep regulars coming back. The service is warm and helpful, and the room has the easy, unpretentious feel of a neighbourhood spot rather than a restaurant chasing tourists.

It sits on Liubarto gatvė, north of the Old Town near the Žirmūnai and Šnipiškės side of the river, so it draws a local lunch crowd and can fill up at peak times. Hours have been known to be limited at weekends, so it's worth checking the current schedule before you make a special trip — but for genuine, good-value Lithuanian home cooking away from the crowds, it's a reliable find.
